At the end of last year Jet Black Cat Music Presents launched the first of a special new series of artist residencies, in collaboration with us… We’ve always loved the magic of residencies and how they’ve shaped communities in music history and given space for some of the most interesting artists to create and connect. For a long time we’ve had the idea to make one happen ourselves, but we want to challenge the notion that residencies need to be city-centric. The Northern Rivers (and The Eltham) have long been close to our hearts, so it feels right, and exciting, that these residencies exist. Maple Glider will take up a multi-date residency here at the pub, with some of our favourite local acts joining her to create something truly special (across May 7th, 16th & 22nd). From there, she’ll carry the energy and perhaps a few new songs gathered along the way, under her delicate wing as she continues on the rest of her intimate Australian tour. For Tori Zietsch, who records emotionally direct and woozily romantic songs under the moniker Maple Glider, music has been an escape from a series of oppressive institutions: religion, enervating relationships, her own brain. Zietsch’s music has formed new pathways both literal and metaphorical; physical and neural, that have allowed her to step outside herself, and shake you - yes, you, the listener - by the hand. Striking emotionality is at the centre of her performance, leaning into an intimacy that is achieved by way of deeply personal reflections and velvety melodic compositions. Vocals melt into layers of plucked acoustic guitar and lulling piano, drawing on the sombre styles of folk contemporaries with a stark tenderness and introspection that assumes the listener is inside her bedroom as she plays for herself. A long time advocate for self-care and the journey toward your own contentment, ‘Under The Stars’ arrives as a timely reminder for mindfulness in a frankly frightening world full of chaos and digital distraction. Watty adds, ‘Under The Stars’ is "a little ode to using stargazing as a nice activity to find inner peace and reconnect with ourselves while living in an age saturated by superficial noise." Beyond that, ‘Under The Stars’ is a lilting slice of unabashed modern indie Australiana delivered by one of our most loveable storytellers, and is sure to add to the acclaim of his 2023 self-tiled debut album and beloved recent single ‘Rock & Roll’. On the Under The Stars Tour, Watty ventures throughout Victoria and NSW on a run of rare solo shows that will again deliver straight-from-the-heart music, moving grown folks to both tears of joy and sorrow. HANA STRETTON Hana Stretton is an accomplished Australian-British multi-instrumentalist, songwriter & producer. Born and raised on a farm in New South Wales, Hana's early life was steeped in natural beauty and isolation, which has become the influence for much of her music. Her work reflects a deep connection to her roots. Hana made her debut record, Soon, outside, in still moments after fires and wild storms had raged through her home in the Australian bush. Completely isolated with just her beloved cows and a few instruments, recording music became a way to pass the hours. The album was self-released in January 2023, with a vinyl run by boutique Australian label brierfield flood press. The following year, P.W. Elverum & Sun (the private press of Phil Elvrum aka Mount Eerie) re-issued a special edition vinyl, selling out almost instantly. WEDNESDAY (USA) OFF-SITE, MULLUM CIVIC Blending the great fuzzy guitars of shoegaze with a faint Southern twang and lyrics fixated on the traumas of small-town life, Wednesday are an indie rock band from Asheville, North Carolina led by songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist Karly Hartzman. The group's songs manage to be deeply personal while touching on doubts and anxieties that are universally recognisable, and after launching Wednesday as a solo project with 2017's I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone, Hartzman transformed it into a full five-piece band on 2021's Twin Plagues, with a fuller and more evocative sound. After signing with the noted indie label Dead Oceans, Wednesday's music became bigger and more emotionally powerful on 2023's Rat Saw God. 2025's Bleeds gave their music a clearer production without blunting the emotional impact of their songs of love and conflict. Can a self-portrait be a collage? Can empathy be autobiographical? What’s the point of living if we’re not trying to understand all the horror and humour that surrounds everything?
